I am sorry to tell people but of the last 4 cases that have dealt with Watchtower that has finally had a resolution in the US 3 have gone for Watchtower, only the Fessler case went against Watchtower. And really the US where there is no limit on damages caused by this will Watchtower have to pay any substantial money. Even in Australia it probably won't be as big as many people on here think. First, it is going to be a question of if the Australian parliament will even take the ARC recommendation and start a pool for survivors to draw from and then it is up the parliament to decide what kind of a time limit there will be on filing a claim and who is eligible to file a claim. It is not going to be the thing that breaks Watchtower, it is going to hobble them but it won't break them.

I was impressed by part of today's symposium entitled ' Safeguard your children from what is evil'
by UnshackleTheChains inwell i have to give credit where credit is due.
it was the part of today's symposium - build a house that will endure.
the part i was most impressed with was 'safeguard your children from "what is evil".

Actually, under the new policy that came out in August of last year, while there won't be a public announcement following approval by the Branch's service department, the elders will privately communicate with parents of minor children to inform them that there is a person who has been accused or convicted of child molestation. If it is only an accusation or if someone has been acquitted of child abuse they actually have to be very careful because they could be sued over slander.

Facebook shuts ex j-dub site for "hate speech"

Simon, I appreciate you expressing your own experiences with these issues. You are right it is easy for hate speech to creep up even if that is not the intention of the site or the moderator. When emotions get heated common sense doesn't always stay with the person and they will say inappropriate stuff and responses can lead to even more inappropriate talk. Unless you have a moderator who that is their full-time job it is not possible to keep up with all of the moderation that a popular site or group needs to keep it compliant with the site's code of conduct.
When information is taken down due to a copyright infringement that is a legitimate issue that anyone can bring up. Copyright law is extremely complicated and even the idea of fair use is not as simple as some people think it is. Putting up a fair use banner in the front of a YouTube video doesn't negate some people's breaking of the law.

There was even a case of the famous Vietnam War picture of a little girl running because the village was hit by napalm and her clothes burned off. An anti-war group or something had posted that picture to show the horrors of war, but Facebook considered it a child pornography and took down the picture and warned the group about their conduct. The picture has been in textbooks for years but Facebook algorithms and moderators still responded in that way.

JWs or Watchtower may have nothing to do with this actually. Facebook had a lot of bad press earlier this year with suicides being filmed on Facebook Live and broadcasted. Facebook then decided in May to hire an additional 3000 reviewers and up their algorithms to proactively take down things that break their code of conduct. It is also noteworthy to remember Facebook is not a government and cannot be forced to keep any speech that it deems offensive up. It is a private company that can choose what they allow and who they allow to speak. Just like this site or JWSurvey any other site that allows for comments, they owner of the site can choose at a moment's notice to take down anything they don't like and there is no recourse.

Freddo:
He was DF over the child molestation. They did not hand over any investigation notes was because the matter was either being investigated by the authorities before the JC investigation was started or as in the case of the appeal committee the decision to uphold the DF was after the man finished his prison sentence.

sorry, darkspilver I wasn't trying to argue with you. I was trying to agree with you. You're absolutely right from an internal investigation it should have been handled differently. You brought up what if they are acquitted and highlighted another thread on here. You don't have to look at another thread. Look at this case the man was found not guilty when he first molested someone. He should have been DF then but by law, he wasn't a molester he was accused and found to not have happened.

darkspilver also in the report it showed that DFing is the only mechanism that JWs have an internal procedure to remove the member. Their criticism wasn't that the congregation investigated it but that there were serious flaws during the investigation and punishment including during the appeal committee.

It is interesting that this inquiry appears to be in conjunction with the 4 other three inquires of the other commonwealths of the crown that have occurred. Of the 5 inquiries the only one that had anything to do with Watchtower is Australia. Northern Ireland, Jersey or Scottland and now England have no inquiry into Watchtower.
